Md. Shameem Ahsan, ndc, Honorable Consul General of Bangladesh in New York

A career diplomat, Md. Shameem Ahsan joined the Bangladesh Foreign Service on 1 April,1993. He joined as the Consul General of Bangladesh in New York on 15 April, 2014. Before his current stint, Mr. Ahsan served as the Director General (External Publicity Wing) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh which primarily deals with public diplomacy and media issues.

Earlier, he served at Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC till February, 2011 from September,2008 as Deputy Chief of Mission/Minister(Political). Mr. Ahsan served in Italy (2004-2008), Kenya (1997-2002), Qatar (1996-1997) and Kuwait (1995-1997). He also served in various positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dhaka. Earlier responsibilities at the Ministry include: Director, SAARC(2002-2004), Senior Assistant Secretary and Assistant Secretary in various Desks including UN Desk, Multilateral Economic Affairs Desk and Americas & Pacific Desk (1993-1995 & 2002).

Mr. Ahsan attended a number of international conferences and meetings including the 12th NAM Summit held in Durban, South Africa in 1997. He also attended various training programs on diplomacy, environment, security, immigration and language issues in USA, Italy, India, Kenya and Kuwait.

Born on September 1, 1966 in Bangladesh, he was educated at Dhaka University and has a Masters & Honors in Political Science (First Class First) from the same University. He received numerous awards throughout his student life for his academic feat.

Mr. Ahsan has written two books on diplomacy/international relations. One of his publications include “Kutnitikosh” (Encyclopedia of Diplomacy). He has also published several articles on various issues such as climate change, environment, economic relations, regionalism, South Asia & Middle East. He continues to write on literary issues.

An ardent debater, Mr. Ahsan enjoys reciting poems, and actively participates in literary and cultural activities. He received a Gold Medal from the President during his school days for the best written essay at the national level.
